Internationally, GLOBE has three main objectives:
-
to enhance the environmental awareness of individuals world wide
-
to
increase scientific understanding of the Earth
-
to
provide opportunities for pupils to achieve greater
standards in science, numeracy and ICT.
GLOBE was
initiated in 1994 in the USA by then Vice-President Al Gore. It is
run by the United States government through partnerships
with other countries. To date 109 countries have
joined the programme and over 16 million data records
have been compiled by the 16,000 schools taking part.
GLOBE also accesses weather station records and satellite
images from NASA and NOAA in the USA.
GLOBE-Europe is a network of GLOBE
countries throughout the EU and beyond, all united by a commitment to make GLOBE
work for students in their countries. Each of the dots below represents a
GLOBE school - and the brighter the colour, the more data they've submitted.
