HEADLINES FROM 2005...
500 Schools In June we registered our 500th GLOBE UK school. Welcome to Echline Primary who trained in Edinburgh and thank you for all your enthusiasm! Summer 05
In February 2005 two GLOBE schools were featured in a Guardian article by Chris Arnot. The article focused on the benefits of using GLOBE in school and impact it can have on the students. - Spring 05
GLOBE Sustainable Development
Activities launched
Eleven new monitoring activities encouraging students to monitor their school’s use of resources have now been launched on the GLOBE website. The activities fall into five categories - Water, Energy, Transport, Biodiversity and Waste and bring the total to twenty practical student activities. Summer 05
New Partnerships This year has again seen a growth in the number of training events and in interest in GLOBE across the UK. GLOBE training is now being offered to teachers in ten milennium science centres around the UK. The new centres include Living Coasts in Devon, The Thinktank in Birmingham and The Deep in Hull.

Marvellous macro-invertebrates
An exciting new GLOBE protocol looking at macro-invertebrates has been introduced. Macro-invertebrates are all the little creatures living in ponds and streams, and their study is an excellent way to monitor water quality.Summer 05
Save the Dormouse GLOBE, the Wildlife Trust and Warwickshire County Council collaborated on a project for gifted and talented students.
The students were presented with the issues facing dormice populations in the county and asked to look at the steps that could be taken to improve the prospects for this key species.

Sensational Seaweed Protocol
For those of you who live by the coast we now have a new GLOBE seaweed activity. The protocol forms part of the phenology survey, looking at the effects of climate on living organisms. Summer 05
Chief Scientist’s Honour Roll
The GLOBE Chief Scientist recognises those schools that report data in ways and amounts that are particularly helpful for scientific analysis. And we are delighted that one UK School and one UK Centre were both recently given this important accolade. -Summer 05 Congratulations go to:

Oldham Schools Adopt GLOBE Schools in Oldham have been given financial support from the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund to join GLOBE in an aim to increase the number of schools with Ecoschool Green Flags. The schools have adopted GLOBE with great enthusiasm and the students are working hard to improve their schools environments.

GLOBE Midlands Action Plan (MAP)
Schools in the West Midlands are now getting involved in GLOBE thanks to funding support from Barclays. The GLOBE Programme’s new Midlands Action Project (GLOBE-MAP) encourages students to become environmental researchers and learn about their school environment.
