The Northumbrian Water GLOBE Project

Launch Event

The Northumbrian Water GLOBE Project was officially launched with the help of two TV Weathermen on 19 July 2007.  The BBC’s Paul Mooney was at Hurworth Comprehensive School, Darlington and ITV Tyne Tee’s Bob Johnson was at Stocksfield Avenue Primary School, Newcastle upon Tyne, to find out about GLOBE from students, and to meet key staff from Northumbrian Water and The GLOBE Programme.

Speaking at the launch event, John Cuthbert, Northumbrian Water’s managing director, said:  “This major initiative puts Northumbrian Water in the world spotlight in the challenge to respond to climate change. The Northumbrian Water GLOBE project is a fantastic opportunity for us to enhance the education of pupils in the communities we serve.  The weather stations have been strategically placed to further improve the data we have available to understand how our sewerage network copes in different weather conditions.  I hope all who have access to a weather station also have fun learning!”

Dr Andy Tasker, GLOBE-UK's Country Coordinator added: "We hope this unique project will bring real benefits to local schools and students, whilst providing Northumbrian Water with important data on local weather conditions."
